31 Days of Global Flavors for National Nutrition Month: Day 5

Today is Day 5 of National Nutrition Month and we are celebrating with Cara Harbstreet’s favorite global flavor. 

Gochujang (red chili paste)

I use gochujang as the base for sauces and marinade that pair fantastically with proteins (especially beef, pork, shrimp, and tofu) and veggie-packed stir fries. We usually try to feature at least 2 to 3 different types of colorful vegetables, plus a base of rice or noodles. Gochujang also plays well with other condiments like BBQ sauce for a different take on familiar favorites, like burgers and sandwiches such as these Gochujang Pork Sandwiches.

As a Korean American, I think gochujang is a nice introduction to our cuisine; it’s versatile and flavorful, plus it’s more easily found than it was in the past. The flavor is not outright spicy (heat) but rather subtly sweet and smoky, so it adds richness and depth to your recipes. It’s also convenient to store and has a long shelf-life, giving you lots of opportunities to enjoy it in different ways.
